History of Merlion Park Singapore

The Merlion’s body symbolizes Singapore’s humble beginnings as an fishing town when it was called Temasek, which originates from a similar root as the word tasek (‘lake’ in Malay).

Its head represents Singapore’s original name, Singapura, or ‘lion city’ in Malay.

Today, you can witness this legend at Merlion Park. Gushing water from its mouth, the Merlion statue stands tall at 8.6 meters and gauges 70 tons.

This is a must see for sightseers visiting Singapore, like other critical milestones around the globe.

Worked by local skilled worker Lim Nang Seng, it was unveiled on 15 September 1972 by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew at the mouth of the Singapore River, to invite all guests to Singapore.

In 2002, the Merlion was moved 120 meters from the first loocation to where it remains in Merlion Park today, before Fullerton Hotel and overlooking Marina Bay.

The recreation center additionally houses a littler Merlion statue. Known as the ‘Merlion cub’, it remains at two meters tall and weigh 3 tons.

The first sculpture and its cub are the most notable among the seven approved Merlion statues in Singapore.
