Sultan Mosque Singapore

Sultan Mosque Singapore

With its monstrous golden domes and giant prayer hall, Sultan Mosque Singapore is a must visit place if you’re in the historic Kampong Glam district.

Sultan Mosque Singapore is also known as Masjid Sultan. It is a prominent mosque in Singapore and one of the nation’s most amazing religious buildings.

History

The mosque was constructed in 1824 for Sultan Hussein Shah, the 1st sultan of Singapore. Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, offered S$3,000 to the development of a single storey building with a twofold layered rooftop.

A hundred years after the fact, the old mosque was in urgent need of repair. The present mosque as you see it today was designed by Denis Santry from Swan and Maclaren, Singapore’s most established and oldest engineering firm, and revamped in 1932.

A little-known fact about the mosque’s remaking—North Bridge Road was compelled to bend around the mosque as it was reached out past Arab Street.

While you’re there, explore the onion-shaped domes. Every dome base is finished with glass bottle ends, donated by lower-pay Muslims during its constructed so that all Muslims, not simply the rich, could contribute.

Gazetted as a national landmark in 1975, the mosque has for quite some time been a point of attraction for the Muslim community. In case you’re there during Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting, visit the night market in the zone and its numerous food stalls.
