Kuala Lumpur Airport Transfer: KLIA to City Guide (2026)

Kuala Lumpur skyline at dusk with the Petronas Towers — the destination for most KLIA airport transfers

Kuala Lumpur International Airport sits about 56 km south of the city, so the first thing every visitor sorts out is the Kuala Lumpur airport transfer into town. The good news: KL has excellent options, from the fast KLIA Ekspres train to airport taxis, Grab and pre-booked private and shared transfers. This guide compares them all with approximate 2026 costs and times, explains the difference between KLIA and KLIA2, and covers the private, SIC and group transfers we operate for travellers and travel agents.

KLIA and KLIA2: two terminals, one airport

Kuala Lumpur’s main airport has two terminals a few minutes apart:

  • KLIA Terminal 1 — full-service airlines (Malaysia Airlines, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, most international carriers).
  • KLIA Terminal 2 (KLIA2) — low-cost carriers, led by AirAsia.

The two are linked by the KLIA Ekspres train (about 3 minutes) and a free shuttle bus, so it’s important to know which terminal your flight uses when you book a transfer. Tell us your flight number and we’ll set the right pick-up point.

KLIA to KL city: all your transfer options compared

Here’s how the main ways from KLIA to central Kuala Lumpur compare. Costs are approximate in Malaysian ringgit (RM) for 2026 and vary with traffic, demand and surcharges — use them as a guide, not a quote.

OptionApprox. cost (RM)Time to cityBest for
KLIA Ekspres (express train)55 one-way28 min to KL SentralSpeed and predictability
KLIA Transit (stopping train)~55 or less35 – 40 minStops en route (Putrajaya, etc.)

Private transfer (pre-booked)Fixed rate — meet & greet45 – 75 minComfort, families, VIPs
SIC shared transferLowest fixed per-person60 – 90 min (multiple drops)Value with a booked, scheduled ride

The KLIA Ekspres is the fastest and most predictable route — 28 minutes non-stop to KL Sentral, departing roughly every 20 minutes all day. From KL Sentral you connect onward by monorail, MRT or a short taxi to your hotel. A taxi or Grab is door-to-door but slower in traffic and priced by demand. The private and SIC transfers below are the ones we operate, for travellers who’d rather have the ride booked, paid and waiting on arrival with a driver holding a name board.

What is a SIC (Seat-in-Coach) transfer?

A Seat-in-Coach (SIC) transfer is a shared, scheduled service — you book a seat rather than the whole vehicle and travel with other passengers heading to hotels in the same area. It’s the most economical way to pre-book a KL airport transfer, because the vehicle cost is split across everyone on board. It suits solo travellers, couples and small parties staying at centrally located hotels who don’t mind a few extra drops on the way. If you land at an odd hour or stay out of the central zone, a private transfer is the better fit.

Private airport transfers

A private transfer gives you the whole vehicle — a dedicated car or van straight to your hotel with no other stops, meet-and-greet at arrivals, luggage help and a fixed price agreed before you travel. It’s the most comfortable choice for families, business travellers, late-night arrivals and anyone staying outside the city centre or heading to Genting or Putrajaya.

  1. Direct and private — door to door, no shared stops.
  2. Meet & greet — your driver waits at arrivals with a name board.
  3. Fixed price — known in advance, whatever the traffic.
  4. Vehicle choice — sedan, MPV or van to match your party and luggage.

Group transfers for tours, MICE & events

For tour groups, incentive movements and MICE arrivals we run group transfers on coaches sized to your party and luggage, with a coordinator managing the arrival so everyone moves together and on time. Group transfers are part of our wider ground-handling service — if you’re an agent or operator moving a group through Malaysia, our Malaysia DMC team can bundle KLIA transfers with hotels, tours and attraction tickets on net rates, and handle onward legs to Johor Bahru, Malacca or Penang.

KLIA to popular areas & day trips

  • KLCC & Bukit Bintang (Petronas Towers, the main hotel and shopping belt) — about 45–60 minutes.
  • KL Sentral (the central transport hub) — 28 minutes by KLIA Ekspres.
  • Putrajaya (the administrative capital, between airport and city) — about 20–30 minutes.
  • Genting Highlands (the hilltop casino-and-theme-park resort) — about 90 minutes; a popular private-transfer run.
  • Malacca — about 1.5–2 hours; a common transfer or day trip from KL.

Tips for a smooth KLIA transfer

  • Confirm your terminal. KLIA (T1) and KLIA2 are different buildings — tell us your flight and we’ll meet you at the right one.
  • Pre-book for late arrivals. Many long-haul and AirAsia flights land late; a pre-booked private or SIC transfer avoids the taxi queue and surge pricing.
  • Carry small ringgit notes. Useful for coupon taxis and tips if you go the public route.
  • Share passenger and luggage counts. It lets us send the right vehicle first time, especially for families and groups.

Why choose Travel DMC for your Kuala Lumpur airport transfer

  3. Local fleet and drivers — operated on the ground in Malaysia, not subcontracted blind.
  4. One partner for the whole trip — transfers, hotels, tickets and tours through one Malaysia DMC point of contact.
