Best Time to Visit Egypt: A Month-by-Month Guide (2026)

The best time to visit Egypt is October to April, when the weather is mild and dry enough to walk around the pyramids, explore the temples of Luxor and Aswan, and sit on the deck of a Nile cruise without melting. Outside those months Egypt gets seriously hot, especially in the south. The one exception is the Red Sea coast — Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh stay pleasant and divable all year. As a Singapore-based DMC that runs Egypt itineraries, here is the honest month-by-month breakdown we give our trade partners before they sell a trip.
Egypt weather month by month
Egypt is long and thin, and the temperature gradient from north to south is the single most important thing to understand. Cairo on the Mediterranean side is warm; Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel in Upper Egypt (the south) run several degrees hotter year-round. The Red Sea sits in its own bubble — buffered by the sea, it is the mildest place to be in winter and the most bearable in summer.
| Month | Cairo (high) | Luxor / Aswan (high) | Red Sea | Crowds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 19°C | 23°C | Mild, 21°C, divable | Peak |
| February | 20°C | 25°C | Mild, warming | Peak |
| March | 23°C | 29°C | Warm, 23°C | High |
| April | 28°C | 35°C | Warm, 25°C | High (shoulder) |
| May | 32°C | 40°C | Hot, 28°C | Quieter |
| June | 35°C | 42°C | Hot, 30°C | Low |
| July | 35°C | 42°C | Very hot, 32°C | Low |
| August | 35°C | 42°C | Very hot, 33°C | Low |
| September | 33°C | 40°C | Hot, 31°C | Quieter |
| October | 30°C | 36°C | Warm, 29°C | High (shoulder) |
| November | 25°C | 30°C | Mild, 26°C | Peak |
| December | 20°C | 24°C | Mild, 22°C | Peak |
The pattern is clear: from May the south becomes punishing, while the November-to-February window is comfortable everywhere but also the busiest and priciest. The two shoulder months — April and October — are the sweet spot for travellers who want warm days without the deepest crowds.

Peak season (October to April): the best — and busiest — months
This is the classic season, and for good reason. Daytime temperatures across Cairo, Luxor and Aswan sit in the comfortable 20s to low 30s, evenings are cool, and rain is almost unheard of. You can spend a full morning at the Giza plateau or inside the Valley of the Kings without heat exhaustion, and a Nile cruise deck is a genuine pleasure rather than an endurance test.
The trade-off is volume and price. December and January are the absolute peak — school holidays, Christmas and New Year sailings, and the most expensive cruise cabins and hotel rates of the year. Sites are crowded, and popular cruise departures sell out months ahead. If your clients want this window, book early. If they want the same good weather with a little more breathing room, push them to April or October, the shoulder edges of peak season, when days are warm, prices ease, and the queues thin out.
Summer (May to September): the heat, and where it still works
Egyptian summer is no joke. From May through September, Cairo regularly hits the mid-30s, and Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel routinely climb past 40°C — occasionally higher. Standing in open desert at the pyramids or temples at midday in July is uncomfortable for most travellers and risky for older ones. This is low season, and prices on cruises and hotels drop accordingly.
Summer is not a write-off, though, if the trip is planned around the heat. Two things make it work. First, early starts: temples open at sunrise, and a 6am visit to Karnak or the Valley of the Kings is done before the worst of the day. Second, the Red Sea. While Upper Egypt bakes, Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh stay in the high 20s to low 30s with sea breezes and warm, clear water — a strong summer destination in their own right. A common summer pattern is a short, dawn-focused dose of Cairo and the pyramids, then straight to a Red Sea resort.
Best time to visit Egypt for…
A Nile cruise and the temples
Cruises run Luxor to Aswan through the hottest part of the country, so timing matters most here. The best window is November to March, when deck time is comfortable and shore excursions to Karnak, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae are not a heat ordeal. October and April are good too. Avoid June to August unless you accept very early temple starts.
The pyramids and Cairo
Cairo is more forgiving than the south because it is further north, but the Giza plateau offers no shade. October to April is ideal. Cairo can also be done as a city break in the shoulder months when Upper Egypt is too hot for cruising — a long weekend at the pyramids and the new Grand Egyptian Museum works well even in early May or late September.
Red Sea diving
The Red Sea is a year-round dive destination. Water is warmest from June to October (around 28–30°C, barely needing a wetsuit), while winter water stays a divable 21–23°C with excellent visibility and fewer crowds. For diving combined with sightseeing, the cooler months win; for pure beach-and-reef time, summer is fine because the resorts stay comfortable.
Budget and fewer crowds
The cheapest time to visit Egypt is the summer low season (May to September), when cruise and hotel rates fall sharply — worthwhile if your clients can handle the heat or focus on the Red Sea. For the best balance of decent weather and softer prices, the shoulder months of April, May, September and October are the smart pick.
A note on Ramadan and peak-season prices
During Ramadan, the date of which moves about 11 days earlier each year, daily life shifts. Many cafes and some smaller restaurants close or run reduced hours during daylight, opening times at a few sites can change, and the pace of business slows in the afternoon. Major attractions, cruises and tourist restaurants generally keep operating, and the evenings come alive after the fast breaks, so it is far from a reason to cancel — but it is worth briefing travellers so they are not caught out at lunchtime.
On pricing, remember that good weather and high prices arrive together. Winter (December to February) is peak season and peak price — the best climate but the busiest sites and the most expensive cabins and rooms. If budget matters more than crowd-free sightseeing, the shoulder months give most of the comfort at a fraction of the peak premium.
How many days, and getting around
A first Egypt trip usually needs 7 to 10 days to cover Cairo and the pyramids plus a Luxor-to-Aswan Nile cruise; add 3 to 4 nights if you are tacking on the Red Sea. The standard pattern is to fly into Cairo, take an internal flight south to Luxor or Aswan for the cruise, then fly back. Internal flights save long road and rail journeys and are well worth building in. Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit Egypt?
The best months are November, December, February and March — comfortable, dry weather across Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, ideal for sightseeing and Nile cruises. October and April are nearly as good with slightly thinner crowds.
What is the cheapest time to visit Egypt?
The summer low season, roughly May to September, is the cheapest, with the lowest cruise and hotel rates. The catch is the heat in Upper Egypt; the Red Sea remains a comfortable summer option.
Is summer too hot to visit Egypt?
For temple-and-pyramid sightseeing, summer is tough — Luxor and Aswan often exceed 40°C. It is manageable with early-morning visits, and the Red Sea resorts stay pleasant, so a summer trip works best when it is built around dawn starts and beach time rather than midday touring.
When is the best time for a Nile cruise?
November to March is the best time for a Nile cruise, when deck time and shore excursions in Luxor and Aswan are comfortable. October and April are good shoulder choices; midsummer cruises are cheap but hot.
When is the best time for the Red Sea?
The Red Sea is good year-round. Winter brings mild air, divable water and fewer crowds; summer brings the warmest water (28–30°C) and the liveliest resort scene. Both work — choose by whether you want diving plus cool-weather sightseeing or pure beach time.
When are the crowds in Egypt?
Crowds peak in December and January around the Christmas and New Year holidays, with November and February close behind. For quieter sites with still-good weather, travel in the shoulder months of October, April or early May.
